Our Marae Trip

Today we went to the Te Hoho Kotahirangh Marare.

They welcomed us in with a powihiri. We gave them a koha of silverbeet, eggs and honey from our school.

In class we have been learning about Paikea and looking at the artwork of Robyn Kahukiwa.

We are designing our own picture book about Wairaka's journey to New Zealand. Its illustrations are similar to the Paikea storybook because we have designed our own kowhaiwhai and tukutuku patterns. We looked at these patterns inside the Marae and learnt the story of how these came to be.

At the marare we learnt about the story of Wairaka, We also looked at the carving of her. They told us how Wairaka was a talented weaver.

We visited the spot where legend has it that Wairaka stamped her foot and a spring came out.

We also saw the home of the pukekeos who are the kaitiaki of the area.

Wairaka used to visit Auckland and burn a big fire on top of Owairaka to signal to her brother that she was home to see him.

We had an amazing morning tea of milo, cookies and fruit.

I felt very happy because I learnt a lot of new things like how to weave a harakeke flower. I saw the wonderful carvings and the amazing weaving.

5. Create 5 questions for each passage that are between you and the author
6. Draw a picture and explain your response to each passage of text.

Passage 1
Every day after work Paul took his muddy boots off on the steps of the front porch.  Alice would have a fit if the boots made it so far as the welcome mat.  He then took off his dusty overalls and threw them into a plastic rubbish bag; Alice left a new rubbish bag tied to the porch railing for him every morning.  On his way in the house, he dropped the rubbish bag off at the washing machine and went straight up the stairs to the shower as he was instructed.  He would eat dinner with her after he was “presentable,” as Alice had often said.
1.  What type of job does Paul do? ____________________________________________________

How do you know this?
2.  Describe Alice: ___________________________________________________________________

Passage 2
Crack!  Thunder struck and rain poured.  Max stared blankly out the window, trying to contain his emotions that raged like the weather.  He was beginning to lose it.  Dropping the kite from his hand, Max broke out into full sobs.  His mother comforted him, “There, there, Max.  We’ll just find something else to do.”  She began to unpack the picnic basket that was on the counter and offered him a sandwich.  Max snapped, “I don’t wanna sand-mich!”  A flash from the sky lit up the living room.  Boom!  Mum sighed.
4.  Why is Max upset? ________________________________________________________________

How do you know this?
5.  What was Mum planning on doing today? ______________________________________________

What in the text supports your description?

Passage 3
“Tommy!”  Mum called out as she walked in the front door.  “Tommy,” she continued shouting, “I sure could use some help with these groceries.  There was still no reply.  Mum walked into the kitchen to put the grocery bags down on the bench when she noticed shattered glass from the window all over the living room floor and a baseball not far from there.  “Oh! For goodness sake, Tommy!” Mum yelled to herself as she realised that Tommy’s shoes were gone.
6.  What happened to the window? ______________________________________________________

How do you know this?

Show Me Five

At school your children are learning about how to do well in school and are practicing 5 classroom rules.

You can help support your child’s learning by commenting and praising them when you notice them following these rules at home.

Ask your child to “Show You Five” (hold up your hand). See how many they remember!

Ask them to show you how they follow these rules, one at a time.

The Show Me Five Rules are:

Listening Ears: (To remind children to quietly listen and pay attention to the speaker.) Praise them at home when they are using their listening ears when others are talking.

Eyes on Teacher: (To remind children to look at the teacher and pay attention.) Praise children at home when they are looking at you with their listening eyes.

Keep Hands to Self: (To remind children to keep their hands to themselves.) Praise your child when s/he keeps her hands to own body.

Use Walking Feet: (Reminds children about walking slowly – and saving running feet for outside!) Praise your children for using their walking feet inside the house.

Use Inside Voice: (To remind children to learn to talk quietly and not disturb others.) Praise your children for using polite and quiet inside voices.

Exciting week 4 and upcoming week 5

Dear parents and whanau,

Sadly the weather didn't behave itself last week and we didn't get to visit the Botanic Gardens. Your child will be coming home with the $5 you sent in for the trip.

On the upside last week was a great week of learning. We had a dog education visit from the council, every Monday we are learning new basketball skills with ex basketball players and we tasted kawakawa from our very own rongoa garden.

This week we are investigating waste and landfills as we will be hosting the upcoming Green Day assembly in week 7. The theme for the assembly is waste and landfills. Make sure you pop in and support our assembly on Thursday week 7.

Water Science and Urban Design

Dear parents and whanau,

Learning about our beautiful rongoa garden last week saw the students think like scientists and write fantastic diamante poems. We learnt about descriptive verbs, nouns and adjectives to create our interesting verses. (Photos of work will be posted soon.)

This coming Friday we are excited to be going to the Auckland Botanic Gardens for a fun day of learning. We are going to be learning about how we can save our streams from further pollution and flooding. Please remember to send the permission slip and $5 to your child's teacher this week.

Previously this year we were invited to share our ideas with a team of people from the council who are redesigning the green and community areas around the Oakley Stream. Our trip to the gardens will reinforce the importance of urban design taking into consideration our precious water ways.

Now on display in the hall foyer is a collaborative art project from across the school showing the children's interpretation of a stream's journey.

This week we will be learning and enjoy talking to you about:

the Earth's water sources
collecting data, analysing and drawing conclusions
the story of Wairaka

Science Week

Science WeekC:\Users\Educator\Pictures\Clipart\Science Boy.jpg
4 – 8 May

Dear Parents and Whanau,
To celebrate Science Week each class will be learning to think like a scientist.  We will be carrying out investigations in class and encouraging children to talk about this learning with you.

Room 17 will be learning about the healing properties of many of our native plants that grow in our very own Rongoa garden. Please ask your child to:

  • name four different plants that grow in our Rongoa Garden
  • name and explain the various uses of four native plants
  • explain perimeter and area of various shapes
  • explain what the terms profit, loss and cost mean in terms of making and selling ointments

Science Selfieshttp://www.eeb.uconn.edu/people/nfiloramo/teacher_clipart_6.gif
No, we don’t want a picture of you but a picture of any wonderful science learning you do at home!

Take a photo or record yourself, and send it to Miss Green, our resident science lover.  Email it to: jgreen@owairaka.school.nz  by Monday 11 May.  We will be sharing all of your great home Science learning during our assembly on Friday 15 May.  There will be spot prizes for a lucky few home scientists!

Learning About What's Good For Our Bodies

The past week we were all very excited to be part in fun lessons in the Life Education Trailer.

We learnt about all the basics to live a healthy lifestyle and how a few of our body's systems work.

It was fascinating to learn how to read the nutrition labels on the back of our favourite cereals, chocolate bars and snack bars. We were amazed at how much sugar was in fruit cereal bars compared to chocolate bars. We discovered the best cereal for us in the mornings was Weetbix as it's low in fat and sugar. The great thing about Weetbix is that we will feel fuller for longer than if we ate a bowl of Coco-Pops or Nutrigrain for breakfast.

We loved the star lights in the trailer and singing 'harry-oke' with Harold the Giraffe on Friday afternoon.

ANZAC Commemorations

This week Room 17 have been learning about the Great War.

We have been reading stories about the soldiers and nurses who served in the war and writing fictional stories based on them.  We watched short films about the soldiers who went to war and looked at the geography of the battles and the countries involved. We finished the week with making yummy ANZAC biscuits and making poppy art for a display in the school library.

Here is a sample of some of our written work:

The Nurse and the Solider
by Maha
It was a hot day. She walked down the hall in an old hospital ship.
"Help me nurse," cried a solider.
"O.k," she says, as she ties a mask around her head. After that she gave him medicine, Some soldiers were crying because they missed their families.

Gallipoli Battle
by Uinise
Bang! Bang! The sound of guns pierce the air. Wounded men are scattered on the ground. I hear screaming and crying men hiding in trenches.
"Ow, my leg!" I shouted, "Help me."
I felt like my life was about to end. All I can hear is gunfire. With all my might I try to stand up and walk.

Here is us eating our biscuits and making our poppy art on Friday.

We had fun learning about the Great War and the battle of Gallipoli this week.

Children of Owairaka

My mum's uncle has a chiku tree in India. He picks one up and says it's not good yet. He puts the ripe ones inside a bucket and puts it away for two months. After two months he opens it up and says, "now its good." When I go to his house he gives me heaps of them to eat. It's like sugar.
